27 अगस्त 2024 के दिन हरियाणा के चरखी दादरी में खुद को गौरक्षक बताने वाली एक भीड़ ने पश्चिम बंगाल से आए प्रवासी मजदूर साबिर की पीट-पीटकर हत्या कर दी थी. पति की मौत के बाद शकीला अपने गृह राज्य वापस चली गईं, जहां उन्होंने तत्कालीन मुख्यमंत्री ममता बनर्जी से मुलाकात कर अपनी स्थिति बताई. पश्चिम बंगाल सरकार ने शकीला को मंत्रालय में अस्थाई पद पर नियुक्ति दी, जिससे वो खुद का और अपनी बच्ची का पालन पोषण कर सकें.
